Got the internet again....

"Cold Coming"~ The author definately merges death and birth together, by giving the idea that one always follows the other. Not just with a person being born after someone somewhere has died, but also with other things in life such as the seasons changing.
~ The saving the sperm in their flasks brings out a disturbing thought, but it shows how desperate the soldiers were to make a new life. More specifically to have a new life walking around that was their own. When they died they liked the fact that somebody that would have similar features to them might be able to roam the earth.
~ The difference between a poet and a journalist is very extreme. Poets are so much more in depth with their feelings making the situation seem more serious rather than just an incident in hollywood with a journalist. Poets usually write on serious matters, things that effect people's emotions.

I sort of took the same approach in how the generalization of the quote" Guys like cars" can be turned into those three variations. So even is a person says the original way, some people are going to get mad.

Thursday the 17th

Ursula LeGuin’s “She Unnames Them” (CR 166-168)~ I found this very interesting, because my friend Josh often proposes the idea about questioning what your talking about when you just say the name of something. Such as, what is happiness? Isn't happiness just an identity to an extreme feeling your experiencing...then, what are feelings? So when she starts to talk about how the animals accept their names, I have to say how do we know that. They don't speak our language, so in their minds they refer to themselves completely differently. Humans only accepted their names, and each name is different depending on the language.
T.S. Eliot’s “Journey of the Magi” (CR 364-366)~ There was a lot of interesting symmetry in this story. Such as, "The camels galled..." All of it helps to place the story in a period in time far in the past. The story makes the reader feel very sorry for the speaker, whose journey is not an easy one, and who is very into biblical things. It bothers him dremendously that he sees sinners without Jesus in their world, and he can not wait for Jesus to save them in the last paragraph when he starts to talk about birth and death.
Tony Harrison’s “A Cold Coming” (CR 395-399)~ This story puts an interesting twist to the newest advances in technology. In a way it appears nice that the soldiers want a part of them to roam on after they die, but is it healthy for a wife to freeze her dead husbands sperm? She would be having a baby by a man that was dead for possibly many years, by that time your suppose to have moved on. I just don't know if I agree that all the soldiers should be saving their sperm in a flask for hopes of reproducing.

Lions and Tigers and Bears! Oh my!

A Lion is an animal that is found in the jungle. It has four legs, and each foot contains claws. Their mouths are extremely big giving them the ability to eat their prey easily. Their ears are on top of their heads, but they are sort of hidden behind their golden mane. Their eyes are kind of large.

A lionness is the female of a lion, her hair is very short but still golden. Her facial features such as her eyes and mouth are more tiny than the males.

Margaret Atwood’s “Siren Song” (CR 304-305) ~ This poem shows how impacting the song is to men, and that the noise is what occurs before people die because it means there is an emergency about to occur. The bird suit most likely just represents how a person can be so guarded with someone until you finally open up. So when the person told the story the bird suit could come off, and then the person would have been helped.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s “Ulysses” (CR 454-456)~ This story is full of imagery. The entire point of the story is to glorify the Ulysses for his performance in the Trojan War, since it was due to him they won. It discusses his son Telemachus, how he does work when he is gone but never fails to remember how he loves him and do the right things. The quote, " Were all too little, and of one to me Little remains; but every hour is saved." is very significant because it talks about how slow the time in the war is going, and how they are all to same to be able to take on the war by themselves.


William Butler Yeats’s “Leda and the Swan” (CR 475-476)~ This poem is very intriguing it starts off giving the feeling that the girl is trapped inside the swan. She is to weak to get out, and is very scared of the whole situation. It mentions how Agamemnon is dead who was fighting the trojan war for his wife back. Zeus was the swan so of course he overpowered Leda, and finally at the end he lets her go.

The story that I choose to use is “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien. It is about soldiers carrying only the necessities, but not survival necessities all the time. One man even carries a rabbit’s foot for luck. So, my topic proposal is to discuss why a soldier carries the certain item he does, based on the details of the items mentioned in the story. Some of it is sentimental, and then others of it is strictly job related.

Extra Credit:
In many eyes of the people in the world, soldiers are some of the bravest men to exist. They kill bad people, fight for their cause, can go for days without sleep, and put their lives in danger all the time. This façade makes people view soldiers as really tough, but their sentimental sides are shown in little ways by “The Things They Carried.” Why does a soldier throw away rations instead of his stationary paper? Carry a rabbit’s foot or M&M’s candy? A soldier carries all the things he needs to fight for survival and protect his fellow men, but the little things he carries along with that give detail into their lives by a great amount.

~ Koller, Larry. “The Complete book of guns.” Novel. 1954
Koller’s novel offers a variety of information on all types of guns created. The limitation of this book is that it is only on the weapons made before 1954. All the information in the book discusses which type of gun performs what task best. The information tells exactly what gun should be used in a certain situation of war, which is important to my project because the story is about what soldiers are carrying. This will help me understand why they have a certain gun in possession.
~ Treherne, J. E. “The strange history of Bonnie and Clyde.” Bibliography. 1984
Treherne goes into depth the lives of Bonnie and Clyde. The lived bad lives of crime, and caused many problems for the general public. The reason it is important to understand this that it is referenced in the story. Thus, a connection could be made between the story and why it is such an important memory. It will help in understanding why soldiers think of the past the way they do.
~ Chan, Sucheng. “The Vietnamese American 1.5 generation : stories of war, revolution, flight, and new beginnings.” Bibliography. 2006
This novel written by Chan explores the details between American and Vietnamese war. This is significant to my paper because a little Vietnamese boy is killed in the story, and his thumb being carried is given a lot of detail. By reading this it could be possible to piece together where the soldier is at from all the gory information on what was occurring in Vietnam. In addition, specific tactics that were used in war are given in this novel, which will explain certain moves done in the story by the soldier.

Trifles vs. A Jury of her Peers

SWA #7: TRIFLES vs. A JURY OF HER PEERS:
First read Glaspell'S play; then read the short story version of it;
Compare the two versions and compare the advantages and disadvantages of each form.
Does either form lend itself more easily to Cultural/Historical analysis? Why?

Trifles starts out with them discovering that there is man that died from being strangled by a rope. Hale was the first one on the scene because he was going to see if John wanted a telephone put in, but Mrs. Wright was acting shady and rocking back and forth on a chair. The trifles come into play with the men discussing how the women worry about the little things, such as fruit, but somebody has to take care of the little things and they might as well do it since they don't have any other jobs. However, as the men are out looking for evidence it starts to seem as if the women are finding more details about what was going on. The women discover a pretty bird cage, and then the bird analogy that is created about her being like a bird herself could actually be applied to all the women since this is a period of time that the women had to do the household chores, and the men thought they were superior. This is why the ladies also understand the significance of the bird being strangled and put in a pretty box. Mrs. Wright was the one that wanted to bury it, because she treasured the bird.

A jury of her peers was very short, but the being picked up in a buggy creates the cultural time zone. It is not very detailed, but the fact that a crime has happened and the Mrs. Hale still feels she failed at her duty of being a good neighbor and going to say hey exists. The advantage of the first one is that there are many details, and you know what the crime is as well as hints as to why it occured. The second one has the advantage of suspense, and allowing the reader to know that the two ladies are not close to one another in real life. A disadvantage of the first one is that the men do not listen well enough or pay enough attention to the women for them to get the evidence. The disadvantage of the second is how short it is makes it not detailed enough to pick up on the murder. Neither really has more cultural or historical data than the other.

Maxine Hong Kingston’s “No Name Woman”

~ ( middle of pg. 152) " dry soil, cuckolded" define and " ghost plagues, bandit plagues, wars with the Japanese, floods."
~(top of pg. 150) " deep-rooted women were to maintain the past against the flood, safe for returing."
What is the historical context for the themes? What is the cultural background? Are they familiar to you? Traditional values of the chinese people around many different areas of time/ generations.
What cultural/historical clues do you have in the story? Why are they significant?
The little bit of history I know about China is that the years before or during the story there was war, battles between people, many deaths. So, that is why the Japanese play such an important role in this story.
What other important cultural/historical knowledge you would like to get and what keywords will you use to search for it?
I want to know if there was an actual flood in the china since it is mentioned in the story, or if it was symbolism.

Maxine Hong Kingston’s “No Name Woman”~ I think the main theme of this story is about the old ways that the girls parents still go by. What is right and wrong to do in a amongst a closely-knit village. The setting was in a china rice village at a house that had a well and farm animals. The point of view is told by the chinese girl.

Jean Toomer’s “Becky”~ I theme of the story clearly has to do with the impact of death on people, but more so with what they can leave behind... such as fear. In addition, to the setting adding to theme because it was a time where race was still an important factor of life. The person telling the story remains anonymous, and the setting is fairly vague meaning that their pretty insignificant to the point the author is trying to make.

He is also very much ashamed of where he is from, because the people around him are rough. In addition he doesn't want any of the girls to know that he is poor.

I believe that it is very smart to look into the history encorporated in text, because then you get a deeper understanding of the message being created. The poem "The White House: by Claude McKay was very interesting. It goes to show the questions you need to ask yourself about the history being used such as what is the "decent street" or "letter of your law."

The death of the Ball Turret Gunner~ I think that the beginning of the poem can have many meanings, but I it seems as if the child is finally able to relax a little bit and tried to get in a comfortable position such as the fetal position. Then just eventhough they are so close to the ground the plane gets attacked and the child dies. I use the word child because the narrator mentions his mothers sleep, but the person is actually a grown-up and probably a man. This poem makes you think of nighttime because he mentions "nightmare fighters." It is understandale that the word hunched is used in this poem, because the area he is in is small and circular, definately very cramped! The last sentence being washed out with a hose sounds awful as if the other people did not care for his body after he had gone or that he had been so destroyed it was the only way to get him out. Either way, it just sounds awful to be used like that after death. The author Randall Jarrell was unable to fly because he did not qualify, so he probably used writing to get out his desires to want to be able to fly. Its interesting how he was viewed as a critic in his writing, and he has obvious mental/emotional problems in his later life after trying to commit suicide, and other things.

spring break is over :(

The soldier~ This poem is very significant and serves to let people realize how everyone wants to make a difference somewhere while their alive so that they can be remembered when they die. The soldier enjoys doing his job because it is respectful and he loves his country England.

Anthem for Doomed Youth~ This poem is slightly confusing, but it is talking about all the things that exist in this day that could corrupt the youth.

Dulce et Decorum Est~ I love the fast past of this poem, the words used are very intriguing. I love how the author uses ryhme sometimes, but not all the time.

Glory of Women~ The year that this poem was written in 1918 which would be at the end of World War 1. It shows how patient women are, and how caring they can be when people are in need.

~ I am not so sure that my introduction is the best way to start my paper off, or that all my ideas flow so smoothly with one another. As in this paragraph should follow that one, or should be moved to a different area.

last warmup before spring break

Identify the message of your poster as an imperative claim ("Do/Don't do this because....") ~
My message was not necessarily a do or don't do, but more along voicing something my friends and I say to each other everytime a smoking commercial comes up. We always say prove it actually kills, because there are still not exact links to smoking and death or lung cancers because you can not fully prove it.
Reflect on what made you choose this particular current issue. My brother actually smokes now, and I hate the idea of him smoking, but this is what he uses against me everytime I throw the words " smoking kills" at him.
Then justify your choice of imagery, colors and words in this poster. I just used purple shades because their calm, and the poster is not suppose to be angry. the prove it kills is in black because that represents death, and it is smaller wording because the main topic of smoking is suppose to catch your eye first.
Consider the limitations of your media. What would you change about this poster if you were not constrained by the size, available materials and/or your drawing skills? I might have added the camel or another smoking product in the background for more effect.

Essay 2 topic

Next, answer the following questions in your topic proposal: Sunglasses
What would you say is the text’s surface message? In other words, what would you say is the text’s main purpose? Sunglasses hide a person's eyes from the world, making it so that people can not connect with them.
What additional, perhaps mixed, messages does this text reveal upon closer examination? That the person is wanting people to not see them or to feel a certain stage of coolness.
Identify the features of the object that are crucial in your analysis. Darkness, the tint makes perspectives change for both sides.
Identify examples of important choices of design elements, such as but not limited to, words, color, and symbolism which help the designer get the main message across. The style tells wether a person likes simplicity or brands. Color what tint the person prefers.
What is the intended audience for this text? How do you fit into it? The audience is all people that have sunglasses. I have a pair of Dolce and Gabanna sunglasses, I wear them when I want to pimp it out.
2. A pair of sunglasses may be made to protect a pair of eyes from the sun, but they really completely flip peoples perspectives on the world and change the connections that are created.

Car Culture

~The car war between hummers and prius was very intriguing. Hummers are definately associated with people that have money, and prius with older money, which is kind of a Great Gatsby theme. The ending point that Mr. Drake made was absolutely hilarious, and an actual valid point. If your going to be a "green freak" then you need to pay attention to all aspects of your life not just a few points.
~The fact that women are not as involved in car design as men is not hidden, and mostly clearly known. More men are crazy about cars than women, but women do still drive cars so it makes perfect sense as to why the companies are wanting women designers to do more than just interior patterns. It would make them sell more vehicles to the women population, if there was something made "for women by women."
~ I am not quite sure of the idea that ugly cars sell faster, nobody in their right mind is going to buy a car that they think is ugly if they have the money. That is absolutely absurd.
~ I absolutely agree with girls wanting to drive pick up trucks, because both my dad and brother have one and I wanna do nothing but drive them any chance I get. Guys really appeal to girls driving pick-ups as well, and it does make me feel very powerful.

I. Are you a Mac or PC fan? Why?~ I would say a PC, mainly because I own one and have more experience with it making me know how well it works.
What about the design of the computer of your choice makes it attractive?~ I believe Mac has been more recently updated, and it makes it look more technological such as something out of the future being thrown into this time. I like the PC more, because its design is so simple.
What about the design of the software?~ Mac is definately more easy to use once you get used to having to, so I am just still more comfortable to a PC. If I used Mac more, I would definately like it more because it would save a lot of time.
How about the advertisement campaign?~ I really don't appeal to technology advertisements, just because of the purpose of them is to get a person to buy it. I prefer to buy a computer off of its quality.

Movie Quote

From Juno, "He is the cheese to my Macoroni." This line sticks out in my head and I use it a lot, because Juno had so many wonderful witticisms as her lines, that I thought it gave sarcasism a whole new level. I was very inspired, and just like to quote it.

Thesis~ A child always is wonderous at the lives their parents led before they existed in the world, especially those hidden stories that their parents seem unable to even speak.

• Second Writing Assignment: In "Ducks on a Pond" a man is finally given the opportunity to discuss his dads favorite sport, baseball, with the man who saved his father's life. The man has always wanted to meet the guy who sacrificed his hand, which also means his whole career in baseball, for someonw else. The story is quite understandable, for a child always is wonderous at the lives their parents led before they existed in the world, especially those hidden stories that their parents seem unable to even speak.

2) My first impression of this poem was that it would be good for any girl to read, and it would probably make them reflect on their character. If only all girls realized that men will do whatever you let them, but if you don't let them you can not only respect yourself, but the men will respect you to. You will be able to walk by the men without worrying about what their saying, and eventually they will stop saying profane things.

3) That a girl can not forget that as soon as you leave the house some man is going to say something to you, and try and get your attention. When you don't give them what their looking for they will insult you, and some girls will cave in and do what they want. But those girls that don't can keep walking until they find the good one.

4) I believe that the narrator is the author Taslima Nasrim, and she is speaking to all girls living. The author is probably speaking for a grown up point of view, to a younger girl who still has some maturing left to do. The relationship is strictly that the speaker or author was at the point of life the girl was some years previous.

5) I think the poem is about girls becoming promiscuous because they are being wrongly influenced by men who don't mean anything. The need to stand your ground and what for something that is actually real.

James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues”~ Interesting how the narrator knows that the guy will ask him for money, and is aggravated by it, by offers him a cigarette and gives him $5 which is way more than what he usually gives to him. I find it interesting also that the narrator hasn't talked to his brother in a year, but felt he could make the assessment that his brother was smart enough not to get hung. I like how the brother tells of their bond being closer because they are seven years apart so he saw his brother first walk and talk, which is why he would feel like a parent figure. Its intriguing that the narrator never had heard his dad's brother died, and that the mother waits until he is leaving to tell him the story.

Mood

My mood this morning was relieved and happy, because my day before was filled with anxiety and anger. If colors were involved it would be pictured with faded black, grey, and red being overtaken by baby blue and purple. These two colors would be dominate because their not to bright, but are definately peaceful and I am not to excited but definately more calm today.

Conitinue Reading Assignment

Golden Grove: In the first interpretation it says in the 5th line, "Who is there to cry for? Is not each man a wanderer," and I enjoy this line because it shows individualism, and in college that is something that is harder to do. So, it shows how each man is searching by themselves.
Notes: *Wandering is purposeless walking

Hills like white elephants: # 5~Everytime she asks him to not talk about it, he doesn't respect her wishes. At the bottom of pg. 126 it seems he is trying to pressure her into by down talking her, as if he is tired of her acting that way. To contradict it, the man at the end of the story carries the bags, and he says he knows they will be happy together if she does this, meaning he does want to be with her.

Girl: #1~ The two speakers are the mother and daughter, and it is show by the daughters voice being italized. Of course, the daughter could still be mocking her mother outloud because there are no breaks in the entire prose for the voices to be a conversation.



The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven: #3~ Since he used to work at the Seattle 7-11 Graveyard shift he probably understands the feeling anxious in the town. It not necesarily the skin and hair as the fact he is alone and looking slightly sketchy making him nervous. The narrator suggests this because he begins to do suspicious actions just to mess with the worker, and if it was his appearance alone, he wouldn't have to do that.

~The translation by Philip Nikolayev is the better one, because the words choosen create a more powerful tone than the other which appears melancholy. The obvious similarity is that both poems have five paragraphs each, and that each one has the same conclusion for each paragraph even though worded differently. An example of why the first translation is better is in a comparison of lines 9, the first is , "Alone, alone amid a naked flatland" and the second is "I stand alone, the bare expanses viewing." The first is clearly a better example of imagery, you can picture the idea of lonliness a lot more.
~Hills Like White Elephants: I am concluded that the statement that is the title was made by the girl to just draw attention away from the argument to something she found intriguing. The argument is a little fussy as to the exact topic that they are talking about, but a vague idea is thought of. That is especially since white is usually related to purity or innocence.
~Jamaica Kincaid: Interesting how the color white is used in the beginning of this story. It shows how a women is suppose to be perfect lady, doing this and that in the exact way she is taught. She is suppose to appear to be honest and dutiful, but she will become a slut because she has no choice in the ways of her own life, the men decide in this poem.

Warm-up

1) Close reading~ I have never heard of this before, but I would assume it would be reading in detail or looking for specifics in the reading. It is defined in google as, "a method in which you pay close attention to a text, either in order to observe striking features generally or in order to answer specific ..." which is basically what I wrote.
2)Pastoral~ I would define as the actions of a shephard, since he would take care of his pastor. One of the definitions of pastoral is "A person or thing associated with the tending of livestock" and its etymology is classical Latin p st r lis. If someone was pastoral they would certainly pay close attention to their livestock.
3) Mistress~ A lover to a married man. It is defined as a women having control or authority, and its etymology is Norman and Middle French maistress and Italian maestressa. So, I guess if a women is in charge she is focused on the specifics of something.
4) Nymph~ I don't know much about this word either but I believe it is a mythical creature of some type. It is defined as "Any of a class of semi-divine spirits, imagined as taking the form of a maiden inhabiting the sea, rivers, mountains, woods, trees, etc., and often portrayed in poetry as attendants on a particular god." So, although it can be a real person thats just a beautiful women it is given the idea of perfection and therefore able to be near higher power. Its etymology is Middle french.

~ Stephen Crane
- "In the desert" is a classic tell of it is better to have loved and lost then to not have loved at all, because the creature says he likes his bitter heart, but his heart is bitter from some sort of heart break. The fact that this is a creature that is naked shows that he is willing to be vulnerable, but since he is also beastial he could handle what else is to come his way. He certainly would be tough enough to survive on his own in the desert. Since he was holding his heart in his hand, it gives the idea that he tried to give it away, and then by eating it he is taking his heart or love back.
- "A Man said to the Universe" tells about an individual acknowledging his own existence out loud as if he should be having someone taking care of him or something. Which is why the universe replys that it doesn't have "a sense of obligation" meaning it does not have to help the person out. It is only the person's responsibility to take care of themselves no one elses.

~Practice 6-D: In the poem "Black Elvis" the obvious metaphoric name is black elvis. His name is connected to the story because black usually symbolizes darkness, death, or much more, and the character is very unnaturally calm and is know to have the blues alot. They use his name to create patterns in his actions or feelings such as when you wants to slip out of the place unnoticed so he doesn't have to sing, if the room was as dark as him it would be easy. Also his feelings were replaced with "harder and colder" ones creeping through his blood, all of which go along with the theme.
~ Practice 6-E: Grandmother in my personal definition means someone that cares for you unconditionally. Will drive you to dance practice, make your dinner, teach you how to bake a cake, and who you only want to see pleased with your own actions. I am sure many other students feel that their grandparents were there for them as well, but then there are probably others without them and some whose grandparents may not have been able to be there for them.

Strategies: First part:
~The first section compared "reading for pleasure versus reading for an academic assignment," and it makes good points about how students address academic readings. I think if you just treat an assignment for a class as if you stumbled upon it, then you would actually enjoy the reading. When reading material on your own, you should always use your presumed knowledge to get in depth of a reading, otherwise you can miss out on some really intriguing details the author has created.
~How detailed the breakdown of the first paragraph of the poem "Say I" is really good, because it helps me know how in depth we are expected to go when writing on poetry.
~ I am not quite sure if we are suppose to do the practices or not, so I just wrote some comments and thoughts.

4. Define Genre: The text defines genre as "a category we use to name and identify a text with consistent and familar features." So its basically grouping texts together so that their similarities are easier to be found and understood.
5. Convections of a text are important to look at because it allows the reader a better understanding of certain points that the author is trying to create. After knowing the genre the reader will be on the lookout for things that are thought to happen, and that makes it possible to pick up on foreshadowing or twists in the story.
7. Shakespeares "Sonnet 130" easily bends conventions because it is suppose to be a love poem which normally tries to make the person of detail seems flawless in everything, and he instead demolishs lots of her features. Such as, "My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground" makes her sound like an overweight elephant more than an object that attracts his eyes.
12. Define Context: The text defines context as "nothing more or less than the who, what, where, when, and why that surround every word, image, or artifact." Its the readers way of trying to figure out details of the text that make it realistic or just relating to some aspect of the world.
13. People approach text for the simple reason that all minds work differently, and certain words spark different thoughts or emotions for different people. In addition, everyone pertains different knowledge, so it is easy to overlook a meaningful word or go to in depth into a poem without realizing it.
